The Smells of Fall – Simmering Potpourri
Fall is always an exciting time of year. The kiddos go back to school, the leaves change into vibrant yellows, and the site of pumpkins and gourds are sure to put a smile on your face. But, the scents that are reminiscence can not be ignored – apples, cinnamon and pumpkin just to name a few.
Simmering potpourri is one way to capture the essence of fall. I love to fill my home and the homes I sell with delectable scents to mirror the season. If you’re selling your home or hosting an open house here is a simple recipe that will be absolutely titillating to your guest or potential buyer.
In a small pot, place 5-6 cinnamon sticks, several anise stars, dried oranges, and a handful of whole cloves. Fill the pot halfway with water. Heat over low heat on a stove until the scent fills the kitchen. Watch closely to ensure the pot is always filled with water to prevent burning.
Edible Simmering Potpourri
Apple cider to fill a large soup pot
One apple, cut horizontally to make circular round slices 1/2-inch thick
One orange, cut into round slices 1/2-inch thick
3 whole cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
6 whole allspice berries
One 2-inch piece of fresh gingerroot, cut into small rounds
Place all ingredients in a large soup pot and bring to a simmer, then reduce and allow to simmer uncovered, adding cider as liquid evaporates.
When guests arrive, ladle out a mug full of the hot cider for each person. You can also serve with an additional cinnamon stick in each mug.
Put two caps full of vanilla extract in a coffee cup and place it in the oven set at 300 degrees. Leave for one hour. Within twenty minutes the whole house smells like Heaven. It is a familiar trick of the trade for realtors.
